Story

Cooper Green Mercy Health Services is owned by Jefferson County, Alabama. It first opened as Mercy Hospital in 1972 as a 319-bed acute care facility and was renamed for former Birmingham mayor Cooper Green three years later. It is located at 1515 6th Avenue South, adjacent to UAB Hospital on Birmingham's Southside. After four decades, the hospital closed its inpatient beds on December 31, 2012, and transitioned to a multi-specialty outpatient clinic. The clinic offers both primary and specialty care, behavioral health, and urgent care. In addition, it offers an onsite pharmacy, radiology, and clinical laboratory, as well as OT, PT, Speech and Respiratory Therapy. The clinic's executive director is Roger Scott McCullough, appointed as Interim in 2014. Consistent with its mission, the clinic continues to offer healthcare to the citizens of Jefferson County regardless of their ability to pay.Funding for indigent care was established by the Alabama Legislature in 1965, using revenues collected from county sales and liquor taxes. As a county-owned clinic, Cooper Green Mercy provides healthcare services to all Jefferson County residents with fees based on family size and income. The Clinic coordinates with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, as a training site for medical residents and to provide patients with diagnostic tests and procedures not provided onsite. In addition, many of the specialty clinics are staffed by UAB faculty who practice part-time at the facility. Through this partnership, Cooper Green Mercy Health Services' patients, most of whom are low income or economically-challenged, are able to receive not just comprehensive healthcare services, but world class healthcare.

Have issues with the amount of time until next appointment but I'm sure it can be explained. Other than that the place is questionable of it's cleanliness. The doctors however are kind and work with you especially in various departments such as dermatology. Primary care Dr is awesome. All in all they work to serve the public who are struggling financially.

This appears to be a updated site and it is absolutely wonderful. I especially like the easy to follow instructions on how to become a patient. I perused the rest of the site and found it both personable and professional and most informative. Good job guys!

the first step in getting help at Cooper Green is a nightmare, these people have no medical experience nor do they have any empathy for any one they assume they own the building, i here the words I ain't and we ain't constantly I thought it was run by the county not a select few that keep calling you a liar to your face and telling you they ain't gunna pay for your medical bills that you accured before you came in there and you need to go back to the people who where treating you and get them to continue to treat you cause we ain't paying for it... doesn't matter of you tell them you bills before you came to them are being taken care of they still keep telling you not to come to them for help you should be at U.A.B. getting them to treat you... then you tell them U.A.B. advised me to come here to get help and they say they not supposed to do that!!! so then you ask them what are you supposed to do if you can't afford health care this hospital is for people who need medical care and can't afford it else where... they say you not supposed to come here when you are being treated at another hospital... one one side i agree if you are trying to manipulate the system but if you truly need medical help this where you go... I got approved and was given an appointment that day Sept. 7 for oct. 25 at that time i had a catheter in for my bladder... way to far off i excepted it cause i had to... 7 days before the oct. 25 I get a letter saying my appointment had been canceled so i called she came back and told me Nov. 25... I said ma'am I seriously can't wait that long I have bladder cancer... she says hang on.... she came back and said sir its 11:50 am can you get here by 12:30 get you card and be in med room 1 by 1 pm... i said yes Ma'am ... i got there at 12:27 they argued with me for 45 minutes saying I lied to them and telling me to go back to the hospital i just came out of i was 15 minutes late and they dont care why but once you get back there to the doctors its a whole new world they are good to you and care about your health

There was a man in the er he had a heart attack in the waiting room and the nurses told him to get back up and sit in the chair and went on about their business like nothing even happened

The only reason I give this place a 1 star is because of Dr Malik in GI. He is the best doctor I've ever had. Otherwise, they would be negative stars. As for the others, they are ALL worthless. Most of the staff is arrogant. This place is a joke.
