I READ about the bill for $143 sent to a good Samaritan who agreed to have his pulse checked and was given a bottle of water. I am a former NY State EMT who responded and was injured at GZ on 9/11; and I have to tell you NOTHING like this would ever happen on our watch. You have to be some kind of depraved to bill for this. And to excuse it by saying "same service for everyone" - those of us on the inside know what sort of excuse that is, and the head of your dept. should be fired, and then examined for fiscal incompetence or worse.

I read the article about the $143 scene eval and bottle of water. It's an excuse to bill another person to pay for your equipment to say you have to give the same level of service for everyone. As a first responder you evaluate the scene and treat accordingly - and no, not everyone is treated the same because they simply don't need it! In the article you said your "desire is to make it right". Well as a Deputy Chief Mike McLaughlin you should have the seniority to get the job done! Shoot, not only should you have given him a bottle of water - you should have offered to buy him a beer!!!

When I read the story about how you charged that Good Samaritan $143 because you checked his pulse and gave him a bottle of water I was shocked. You should be ashamed of yourselves!! I'm so glad I glad I don't have to depend upon this bunch to provide me with emergency services!!
