Curly Redwood Lodge

About

Northern California's most Unique redwood lodge on America's Wild Rivers Coast

Story

The Curly Redwood Lodge began as an idea by Tom Wyllie who owned the Redwood Room in Klamath, California. He thought it would be possible to build a lodge out of one redwood tree. He liked curly redwood and found a tree near the Klamath River from which enough wood could be used. The tree was 18’ 2" at the butt cut and curly to the tip of every branch. It was so huge, it had to be cut into 5 logs and quartered. The logs were then loaded over their own stump by smoothing the stump with a chain saw, cutting one side just the height of a truck bed and three logs were put on the opposite side of the stump so the quartered logs could be pushed onto the truck bed with a caterpillar.

57,000 board feet of lumber came from that single tree when it was cut down in 1952 and was brought to Crescent City. Many mills sawed, air-dried and cut the redwood into various different cuts for paneling, posts and doors. All the wood was cut into solid pieces; not one piece of veneer was made or used for redwood; there is enough curly redwood lumber left to build more units for the future.

This place is really sweet! The entire place was made of one redwood tree! There's a history here and that's part of what makes in unique. Room wise, they were clean and spacious. Price was very fair for two beds for a night.

Considering this is an older hotel; SUPER CLEAN!!! friendly staff, great location, easy walking distance to several restaurants (yummy, casual Crab Shack), and the oceanfront, felt secure, and a great price!!! We paid $78 for a double on a holiday weekend. Just have to love the curly redwood decor. It's beautiful blast from the past.

Nostalgic, yes. Neat history, yes. Old and needing some updates such as fresh paint, yes. Good heater, yes. Nasty bathroom that needs a thorough scrubbing, yes. **My main complaint here is the shower. The light colored grout on the bottom of the shower was dark brown/black. The soap dish was rusty and nasty, the drain was gross. That's it. I would have been pleased as a peach if the bathroom was clean.

There was no hair dryer in the unit we didn't bring one as most places have them. Bed wasn't very comfortable. Room was large, shower was nice. TV was an older RCA tube. Not a bad place, totally fine for a one night stay.

Great rate for a reasonable room. Room is clean and comfortable. All the wood work is quite pretty. Could use a few updates but it's better than I'd could be for the unique structure that it is.
