Story

The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

I love this zoo. Its easy to tell they care for their animals a great deal. My husband come here for walks, we really enjoy feeding the duck/geese in the pond. Staff are always friendly and answer questions. Ice cream is a great perk on a 90 degree day. I'd definitely recommend a visit to anyone visiting Bismarck, or residents just looking for something new to do.

Price is great especially if you purchase the family pass for the season. They have a great variety of animals. It's a great way to spend an afternoon. The facilities are clean and have a concession stand. It has definatly improved over the years. If you have little ones defiantly worth the visit.

Reasonable pricing. Friendly staff. Decent selection of animals. Low budget atmosphere. Overall a decent place to spend the evening but not worth 5 stars.

Nice little zoo. Reasonably priced. Not so huge that it is overwhelming or exhausting, but still a wide variety of animals. Animals seems to be well taken care of. One thing I always find odd is that zoos (not exclusively this one) often have bald eagles in enclosures where they are unable to fly. I understand that some of these birds have been injured and are unable to live in the wild, but it still seems strange to have our symbol of freedom in captivity.
