Story

The Discovery Center is a children's museum, nature center and wetlands boardwalk near downtown Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Exhibits include themed exploration areas for town life, science, trains, cars, a fire engine and farmers market. There are live animals on display, an outdoor nature play area, and trails through the wetlands.HistoryThe Discovery Center began as the "Discovery House", a children's museum, in 1986. During its first year of operation it had 11,000 visitors. In 1995 after it outgrew its old location the Discovery House staff, Congressman Bart Gordon and Murfreesboro Mayor Joe Jackson, with the help of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, began to study the possibility of reusing the vacated site of the old Murfreesboro Water & Sewer Plant. After several years it was decided that, for environmental reasons, the old structures should be demolished and new buildings built. In 1996 the City of Murfreesboro leased 6 acres of city land to the Discovery House. The Board of Directors, with the help of local citizens, was able to procure a large amount of privately donated wetlands. They then began a grassroots funding campaign to raise the money needed for the 'Discovery Center". By 1999 $1.8 million had been raised and the construction of the 18000sqft center began in 2001. Its grand opening was held August 3, 2002.As well as its museum the Discovery Center includes 20acre of wetland. The Discovery Center and the City's Greenway trail system and parks have reversed decades of local environmental damage and preserved large areas of vanishing wetlands and natural areas which include rare native plants. The Discovery Center marsh contains the state's largest population of sessile water-speedwell.

Greatest place ever! Clean and very engaging! Something for every child's interests (enjoyable for big screen as well). And for extras the attached playground, wetlands and sSpring makes for some great outside time. Raised walking paths above wetlands are even and well constructed!

Nice place for kids to explore. Well maintained and clean. Had a variety of activities for kids. Baseball related themes upstairs we're great for my older kids as well. Not as chaotic nor loud like some other children's museum's or activity centers I have been to. A nice experience for all involved. (Children ages from just under 2 years old to 12 years old were in our group.)

Would be a great place if they would clean the wetland. It use to be home to hundreds of ducks. Also a home to the river otters. Now it's a disgrace. Can not believe they have let the wetland become a trash pit.

This was a lot of fun for all the kids. I went with 5 little ones ranging from 6 months to 10 years. Everyone found something they loved doing. The water table was a huge hit with everyone and the baby loved the Tot Town full of soft crawling obstacles, balls, and sensory activities. the baseball exhibit was a hit. We will definitely be back.

This place was more friendly for the younger kids crowd in my opinion, but the environment was very fun and educational. They had an art room with art activities for kids of all ages. They have live animals, a special room for children under 4 and another internal room for babies. They have a nursing suite and several bathroom's. The only thing I noticed and wished they had was a food set-up. Even if it was just snacks and drinks. Overall though, it was super fun!
