My son is a graduate from the Georgia Fire Cadet Explorer Program and has always wanted to be a firefighter. My dad is also a retired firefighter. Since we've relocated to Maryland my son attempted to volunteer at the District Heights Station on Marlboro Pike since this is our neighborhood station. Despite completing the package and turning in requested information, no one has returned his call. He has called daily and left daily messages and again, no return call. The station members keep saying the same thing; "The Chief will give you a call". I have gone up to the station myself to inquire and have been turned away and denied to speak to the chief on duty and his/her correct name, or they constantly say there isn't any Chief there. I have to call and ask for the names of the Chiefs on duty daily. I have never felt so disrespected and excluded as a member of the community. In addition, mistreated by public servants that have sworn to serve its community. This station has not had a volunteer in ten years and I am wondering why. Moreover, why would anyone would turn away youth seeking to continue a bright future in their field of interest and has a genuine love of helping others. Race should never be a factor and I pray that is not the motive. However, all members of the station need a refresher course in customer service to include the Officers. I have sought headquarter assistance and hope this is resolved expeditiously. If not, I am filing a formal complaint and suggest you do the same.
