About

We practice love, explore spirituality, build community, and promote justice. All are welcome.

Story

We currently serve over 500 adults and over 130 children and youth through worship, life-long education, fellowship, social justice, and community outreach. East Shore is a vibrant , caring, liberal, welcoming community in which all freely explore, develop and celebrate the meanings , values and purposes of their lives.

Unitarian Universalists believe that personal experience, conscience and reason should be the final authorities in religion. In the end, religious authority lies not in a book, person, or institution, but in ourselves. We put religious insights to the test of our hearts and minds. Ours is a free faith.

My family enjoys this church. I'm just not big on religion. I pay lip service once in a rare while out of respect for my family.

I have found the interim minister, Elaine Peresluha to be difficult to deal with and not someone who listens respectfully, and fully credits what she is told. She sometimes makes decisions without first taking the time to gather all the available information, which can lead to a bad result. The Director of Religious Education, who fancies herself to be a "person of color," was part of a controversy that led the resignation of the head of the UUA. It began with her protest of some UUA organ hiring a white man when a woman of color was available. To me it is just very sad that we cannot view everyone as a human being, and give the benefit of the doubt to those who did the hiring, that they did their best to pick the best person for the job. I hope that others would agree that there is no situation in which a job candidate should be denied consideration based solely on his immutable characteristics, which he did not choose. Even if we give preference to a candidate, I would hope it would not be absolute, in any situation, and that we would recognize that nobody's qualifications begin and end with that person's gender and race, but that every person has many more characteristics and qualities that should be considered. Because those doing the hiring cannot share all of the information that they considered, I think it is important that others be respectful of the difficult nature of hiring decisions and not rush to second-guess, based on an incomplete set of information. We should always recognize that every person has the right to treatment that is at least fair to that person, and that if a hiring decision were to be made solely on the applicants' race and gender, that this would not be the case.

East Shore is a liberal religious group that shares a common set of values related to acceptance, tolerance, and openness. During this year of transition from a much-loved minister of 25 years, through the search for the church's next "permanent" minister, Elaine Peresluha has stepped in to facilitate the transition beautifully. She is well-read, articulate, funny, insightful, and offers wisdom that comes from a lifetime of thoughtful experience. Her Sunday morning sermons these last few months have been some of my all time favorites! She is a strong leader and a gifted and accessible speaker.

Rev. Elaine was my interim minister in Portsmouth NH for two years where she handled very difficult personnel decisions (the organist was one) and was 100 percent backed by the UUA office for her actions. The new settled ministers appreciated her handling of these problems...I know as I was on the church council during this time! She is doing wonders at East Shore...

Reverend Elaine Peresluha has come to East Shore bringing love, laughter, stability, common sense, spiritual insight, and a toolbox of everyday wisdom. She is friendly and accessible on Sunday morning after the sermon, and during office hours. There is a casual accessibility to her and a no-nonsense, lets get it done reality in her approach to ministering. East Shore is lucky to have her.
