About The people called Methodists who bought the land for a church and school at 704 Fifth Street represent a rich fabric of family trees. We invite you to join us as we make disciples of Jesus Christ! Story The Natchitoches Missionary Society Church began under the leadership of Rev. Ebenezer Hayward in 1866. By mid-year, they had purchased a lot at the corner of St. Denis and Fifth St. By April 1867, the church and education building had been built with the help of a $2000 grant from the Methodist Episcopal Society of New York. A marker at the site notes that the church, built by former slaves, was the first Methodist church built in Natchitoches. According to Matthew’s Gospel, the risen Christ made it clear: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (28:19-20). Based on this “Great Commission,” our United Methodist Church has stated its purpose: “The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
