About:
About A pasture based research center that focuses on improving equine management while enhancing land stewardship. Story Philanthropist Paul Mellon donated the 420-acre farm to Virginia Tech in 1949 to foster research that improved pasture and animal productivity while enhancing the land. The center was used primarily for beef cattle research for 40 years, but was rededicated to equine research and teaching in 1992. The MARE Center has been instrumental in advancing the frontier of knowledge related to the care and well-being of the horse. Many of today's common practices regarding equine nutrition, growth and development, pasture management and exercise physiology were developed as a result of research conducted at the Center. Today, we continue the rich tradition of research in pasture-based nutrition, and have expanded our discovery efforts to include additional disciplines of genetics, immunology, reproduction and behavior. The center is one of 11 of Virginia Tech's Agricultural Research and Extension Centers. Mission The MARE Center creates, integrates and shares knowledge to improve the health and well-being of the horse, the environment and the community.
