Story Parish History Resurrection Catholic Church has been serving the Boyle Heights community since 1923. Resurrection Catholic Church is part of the Deanery 9 of the San Gabriel Pastoral Region. The original church was located on Lorena Street and the new building, on Opal Street, was built in the 1950’s. Father Ramon D. Garcia (1913-1972) became pastor in March, 1953. He added substantially to the “physical plant” of the parish, but more importantly, he gave identity to the mostly Mexican-American community which, by that time, had replaced the pioneering Italian, Irish, Hungarian and Polish populace.
