About The Secretary of State is the state's chief elections officer, chief corporations officer, and supervisor of the State Archives & Library. Story The Secretary of State is second in line of succession to the governor and heads the Washington State Elections Division, Corporations & Charities Division, and our Washington State Archives & Washington State Library. Additionally the Secretary of State oversees Legacy Washington, who documents extraordinary stories in Washington’s history through oral & written works.
