About Utah International is a charter school located in South Salt Lake that provides rigorous college preparation and career preparation for a global economy. Utah International offers integrated project based learning in a multicultural setting. Story Our vision is to honor and celebrate each student’s culture and identity while empowering him or her with language, global literacy, collaboration, leadership, and critical thinking skills. A vast amount of educational and cognitive research indicates that these four factors increase student learning and keep kids in school: 1. A small school setting. -UICS will have fewer than 500 students. 2. Meaningful relationships with teachers and students. -UICS students will study in cohorts of 80 students and stay with the same instructional team for two consecutive years. -UICS students will be grouped heterogeneously (no tracking). 3. Integrated, project based curriculum with scaffolding for students who need it. -UICS students will work on projects that integrate aspects of math, history, language arts, and science into each unit of study. -UICS students will use learning scaffolds such as pictures, video, graphic organizers, manipulatives, vocabulary development, and opportunities to collaborate with their peers. 4. Teacher teams that collaborate. -Instructional teams will include a math, science, language arts and social studies teacher. -Teams will collaborate to create interdisciplinary projects, monitor student progress, communicate regularly with families, and conference with counselors, social worker, refugee liaison, and administration. -Subject area teachers will create and administer common assessments and ensure vertical alignment in curriculum Mission Our mission is to provide a rigorous and relevant education for secondary students interested in global perspectives, including recently arrived immigrants, refugees, and native English speakers.
