The Reformed Church in America is a fellowship of congregations called by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit to be the very presence of Jesus Christ in the world. A thousand churches in a million ways doing one thing--following Christ in mission, in a lost and broken world so loved by God. Reformed Theology and faith is centered in Christ. The final authority in the Reformed Faith is Scripture, the living Word of God, spoken to everyone through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate two Sacraments: Baptisim and Communion. As the Bible tells us in Acts 2, the early church devoted herself to: 1- the teaching and learning of Gods word. 2- prayer 3-Upholding the sacraments 4- caring for others in the community This vision for the Church comes from God and shapes our ministry in Mohawk. History of the Reformed Church... In what is now lower Manhattan, on a Sunday in 1628, about fifty people gathered around a crude table in a mill loft. Their celebration of the Lords Supper marks the birth of the Reformed Church in America. The congregation they founded still continued today as the Collegiate Reformed Church in New York City. The Reformed branch of Protestantism is rooted in the Reformation of the 1500's. Its primary leader was John Calvin of Switzerland, whose reform movement spread to Scotland where it became the Presbyterian Church, and the Netherlands where it became the Dutch Reformed Church. In the 1600's, congregations of the Dutch Reformed Church in North America spread. Started in 1753, the Historic Fort Herkimer Church is the second oldest church in New York State! Our Congregation here in Mohawk has a long history dating back to December 11th, 1838! Today the Reformed Church of America has about 950 churches in the US and Canada with approximately 275,000 members.
