About Laboratory Radiology Dentistry Optometry Outpatient Care Inpatient Care Diabetic Clinic Women's Health Clinic Behavioral Health Pain Clinic Story Dietary Department The Mescalero Service Unit Dietary Department is managed by a Registered and Licensed Dietitian who also provides nutritional education and analysis to patients, conducts nutritional assessments, provide appropriate education and diet counseling. The RD also counsels patients and their families in nutritional principles, dietary plans, food selection and economics and records information in the patient’s electronic health record. The RD plans, develops, and evaluates the public health nutrition and dietetic program. Provides consultation and technical assistance to all Tribal programs with a nutrition education, food service, and/or health component. The present Dietary Department head is also the service unit’s only Certified Diabetes Educator and Special Diabetes Program for Indians Grant Coordinator. Provides complete diabetes education including medication, nutrition, foot care, insulin administration, self-blood glucose monitoring. Orders, dispenses glucometer and teaches patients how to monitor their blood sugar at home. Inpatient meals and snacks are provided by the department as well as limited snacks to outpatients with diabetes and patients receiving extended treatment in the clinic. We also stock a nourishment room for patients requiring snacks after hours such as soups, crackers, jello, oatmeal, broth, pudding, tea, and milk. Dietary hours of operation: Monday through Sunday, 7am to 5pm.
