"Satiate your casual side at Rise, where we feature the doughnut with a French pedigree and experience a part of America’s culinary history. The beignet pronounced “ben-yay” originated in France and came to the United States around the time of the Civil War via the New Orleans open-air food market. It was originally a peasant children’s treat, made at the end of the day from scraps of leftover dough, and topped with confectioner’s sugar.
