About Library Story A lovely example of Classical Revival architecture, Evanston's Carnegie Library building was designed by New York architect Albert Randolph Ross (who also designed a Carnegie Library in Washington, D.C.). Built with a grant awarded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded Feb. 20th, 1903, the grant itself was for $11,000 and Mrs. Carnegie added a piano to the gift. (The piano is still on display in the Fiction Area in the Library's current building.) According to a 1906 press report the library opened with "3000 choice books to suit all fancies." In 1984, the Uinta County Library moved from the Carnegie building to Courthouse Square, and the Uinta County Museum and the Evanston Chamber of Commerce took over the space. The building occupied by the Library today was previously the Safeway grocery store. The Library is currently raising funds to help remodel the now 28-year-old renovation.
