Story Casa Grande Ruin Reservation was set aside on March 2, 1889, proclaimed as the nation’s first archeological preserve and cultural site on June 22, 1892, and redesignated as Casa Grande Ruins National Monument on August 3, 1918. The monument is named for the Casa Grande (Great House), a four-story prehistoric structure constructed by the Ancient People of the Sonoran Desert who inhabited the beautiful Sonoran Desert from 500 to 1400 A.D. Casa Grande Ruins National Monument protects the finest architectural example of 13th Century Hohokam culture and archeology in the American Southwest. Mission The Casa Grande Ruins National Monument was set aside for the preservation and interpretation of the Casa Grande ruins and other ancient buildings and objects of prehistoric interest. The mission of the National Park Service is to promote and regulate the use of the...national parks...which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.
