About:
About The mission of the Westchester County Department of Health is to protect health, reduce environmental risks, prevent disease and promote access to care and a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages in Westchester County. Story The Health Department is always available to respond to public health emergencies. You can call us anytime at (914) 813-5000. We respond to public health concerns such as potential rabies exposure, foodborne illnesses, sewage, chemical or oil spills, public drinking water and bathing beach water quality and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. After hours, we will return those calls that we consider to be public health emergencies. Other calls will be responded to the next business day. For non-emergency calls, you can also send us your comments and suggestions by e-mail. After hours, the Health Department responds to public health emergencies such as sewage spills, chemical or oil spills, encounters with potentially rabid animals, lack of heat, foodborne disease outbreaks and infectious disease concerns. Each evening a Health Department staff member and a physician respond to emergencies called in to the main Health Department number. A taped message gives examples of public health emergencies and pertinent phone numbers after hours. If you call is not an emergency, you can call (914) 813-5000 on the next business day or follow the prompts to leave a message. Mission The Health Department works to promote public health, prevent the spread of disease and prolong meaningful life for all Westchester residents. Staffers inform, educate and empower people about public health issues, connect people to needed health services and ensure the availability of health care. The department monitors health status to identify community health problems, diagnoses and investigates them and mobilizes community partnerships to find solutions. The Health Department develops policies and plans that support individual and community public health efforts. The department enforces laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety, including the state and county sanitary codes. The health department also surveys and regulates air and water quality in Westchester.
