About The Arlington Public Library provides free access to information, creates connections among people and promotes reading and culture--for every Arlingtonian Story February1930 - Arlington Community Library Club sets up in refurbished double garage on S. Fillmore Street. 1933 - Library moves to abandoned Fillmore School (renamed Columbia Pike Community Hall) near corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed. No functioning toilet, heated by coal stove. 1936 - County Library Association formed; Arlington Community Library becomes part of Arlington Government. July 1941 - Columbia Pike Community Hall torn down; library collection moved to second floor of Clarendon Library. December 1942 - Moves to new store building at 911 S. Glebe Road, Westmont Shopping Center. Increased hours and circulation. 1952 - Expands into adjacent store, doubling size. 1959 - Moves to 3239 Columbia Pike, Westmont Shopping Center. Becomes then largest and best equipped library in Arlington County. 1975 - Moves to current location at 816 S. Walter Reed Drive, shared facility with new Arlington Public School Career Center. Library space has 20,000 square feet compared to 2,600 at previous location. September 13, 1975 - Dedication of Columbia Pike Branch Library.
