The Historic Cold Spring Presbyterian Church is located in southern New Jersey, approximately three miles from Cape May. The church is a National Historic Landmark. It is registered by the Presbyterian Historic Society in Philadelphia as an American Presbyterian Site and also in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. Mission Mission Statement The congregation of CSPC affirms that the task of the church is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and His redemptive will for our lives. Members believe that the Bible is God's Holy and Inspired Word, and the authoritative witness to the Triune God's self-revelation in His Son, through God's Holy Spirit. Members affirm by the preaching and hearing of the Word, and the celebration of the sacraments, that God is a forgiving God, and that we are graciously saved by God's faithfulness in Christ, alone. In repentance and faith, we are to testify by word and deed to His loving purpose for our lives and for His creation. The congregation is committed in its spirit, and with its material resources, to provide support for mission - on a local, national and global level - in accordance with the Great Commission of Christ, the Head of the Church, as attested by the scriptures , and upheld by our denomination's Book of Order. Impressum Our congregation has been influenced, in part, by its history and tradition. Legend tells us that five presidents were visitors: Harrison, Lincoln, Pierce, Taft and Woodrow Wilson. The church has held continuous services from 1714 to the present. The first building was a log meetinghouse, upgraded to a frame and shingle church in 1764. The current structure, affectionately known as "Old Brick" for its red brick composition, is of federal design and was erected in 1823 by Thomas Hughes, the architect of well known Congress Hall in Cape May, NJ. Inside the main sanctuary, the pews have individual doors, and there is seating for 200. In the 19th century, a popular means of raising funds during construction was to have church members purchase their own pews. Each pew was then numbered and equipped with its own door and latch, which still exist today. The doors are no longer used, as theology has shifted from individual to communal worship. The U-shaped balcony overlooks the sanctuary and houses an organ, a choir loft and seating for approximately 100 people. In 1979, Price Hall was erected nearby as a fellowship and social hall, where many community groups meet. The manse, also on the church grounds, was completed in 1958. The church is surrounded by one of the oldest cemeteries in the United States, occupying more than 50 acres. The oldest headstone is dated 1742, and is the resting place of Sarah Eldridge Spicer. More Mayflower descendants are buried here than anywhere outside of Massachusetts.
