This review is geared more toward people considering working at Elite than parents or students. Elite earns 1 star from me because I’ve never been treated so poorly by an employer. I have a master’s degree in creative writing, have published work in several literary magazines, have taught essay writing at the college level, and currently freelance at NBC Bay Area. I was looking to get back into teaching this summer and was excited when Elite wanted to interview me right away and hired me on the spot. (An employee had suddenly quit and they needed another SAT writing instructor ASAP.) After the interview, I stayed to observe an excellent teacher and took the hefty curriculum home to study. The next day (a Wednesday) I was back to observe, study the curriculum, and ask questions before diving in Thursday. At the last minute, I was asked to fill in that afternoon and for the next couple days, teaching a middle school class. Again, I was happy to do this favor, even if it meant rushing from Elite to NBC and scrambling to come up with a three-hour lesson plan on my lunch break. To be honest, I was grateful to be busy and needed again after job hunting. The next day I was met with SAT prep students who were rambunctious, but who truly wanted to learn. I spent each night planning the next day’s class, scheming how best to make the rote, dense lessons sink in, how to make the material more engaging, and how best to coach my students to write strong, detailed essays when confronted with vague prompts. It was a challenge I was really looking forward to meeting, especially with such a great group of kids. I taught for three days before my students were given an evaluation to fill out. I taught for a few days more, and then went on a vacation that had been booked for months, and which I’d been assured was no problem. On the day I flew home I got an email from the director that said I’d been fired a week prior because of poor evaluations and “concerns from students and parents.” I was devastated, confused and angry. I wracked my brain for what I could have possibly done or said to warrant such a strong and swift reaction. I had a suspicion I was the scapegoat for the substitute who’d had the students their first few days (a college student who seemed more interested in playing it cool than doing any actual teaching) and that Elite had found someone they could pay less while I was on vacation. I even wondered if it had something to do with my being pregnant. Over the phone, the director said, and I quote, “It was nothing you did. It had nothing to do with your abilities.” He had no good answer as to why he fired me without even showing me the evaluations or addressing any concerns with me first. He just repeated he “had to do something right away” when he got complaints. In short, if you’re looking to work here, it’s a gamble. Don’t count on job security or any form of professionalism. The office is chaotic and a lot of misinformation flies around. The pay is lower than at similar places. Personally, I feel pretty betrayed and used. I bent over backward to do Elite favors the week and a half I was there, and turned down other job opportunities. In return I was axed with the weakest of explanations. That being said, if you are a parent thinking about enrolling your high schooler in one of the “boot camps” I think it’s a good option. Over the course of eight weeks the students take eight practice exams, work through an entire workbook, and spend a lot of time honing their skills. However, I don’t think it’s the best form of instruction. The material is dull and relies on memorization and homework rather than engaging exercises/classroom experiences. A dedicated student could do it on his or her own, or with a tutor.
