The history of how memphis started. If you know where to look it’s the good, the bad, and everything else. You have to come at least once a season and just walk around a section. Stories everywhere. Great tours audio and guided. Many special events to choose from. Come be a part of memphis history and if the bell rings, we’ll good news it’s not for you! Just step aside and be respectful. great place for nature and photos. I would simply bring concern to some of the long term upkeep. There seems to be a lot of damage from tractors etc, one section is falling into the interstate, and I don’t see maintenance on those, it’s actually more common in some of the newer section.
Elmwood is a very beautiful place, don't get me wrong. My Mother loved it so mush as a child and asked to be laid to rest there. So imagine my heartbreak when they intentionally defaced and damaged my Mother's headstone and others on mother's day of 2017. Click on photos to see what I found on Mother's day! The mud cover headstone is face up! That's not the bottom. It's not upside down The hurt they caused me on Mother's day wont ever go away. Now I know some of you love the horror Movies they show and Haunted tours they give. But You have people buried there that would not like you turning their final resting place into a sideshow. My mother is one of them. I know that's how you raise money but In the State of TN it's felony to do any of the things you are doing there. Please look at what I have starred in Tennessee code 46-2-105. Crimes and offenses a *No person shall willfully destroy, ***deface, or ***injure any monument, *tomb, ***gravestone, or other structure placed in the cemetery, or any roadway, walk, fence or enclosure in or around the same, or injure any tree, plant or shrub therein, or hunt or shoot therein, *play at any game or ***amusement therein, or loiter for lascivious or lewd purposes therein, or interfere, by words or actions, with any funeral procession or any religious exercises. b A violation of this section is a *****Class E felony*****. Now as for the staff they called it a accident, a simple mistake. They told me they weren't liable for accidents in the everyday operation of their business. They said we cleaned it and put it back and that's all they could. With a no feeling sorry. Yes they put it back but I cleaned it not them. I filmed myself cleaning on Mother's day! Once the news showed up they tried offering me a new headstone. I told them nothing will fix the hurt and her headstone is the one I gave her. They blocked me form their Facebook when I wrote a review. So now try taking this one down. I am asking the IRS and the State of TN to see where the money is going from the movies and Tours.
We were looking for a sign for our son Memphis could stand next to. This came up on the Google search so we checked it out. No Memphis sign but super cool cemetery.
Huge place, you can drive through in car. But, I walked with my son on foot at our own pace. Very interesting & beautiful with a lot of history.
Elmwood is, indeed, a beautiful, peaceful and serene place to stroll through and get away - even for a while - from the world that surrounds it. As a photographer, I especially enjoy walking through and photographing the statuary which is the type of art that we shall not likely ever see made again. The reason for my four stars is because I do have a physical handicap which prevents me from walking long distances at a time. Therefore, I have to drive my car down the streets, find some place I can stop, exit the car and then walk the cemetery in parts. I should like very much to take the guided tour, but that is impossible for me due to my inability to walk such a long distance. It would be a wonderful idea for there to be small golf carts for those handicapped persons to ride the tour, or at least one of the new Bird Bikes. That way, those small vehicles would be easy to park on the side of the street without blocking the street or running over into the grassy areas.. It just is not well handicap equipped for those who are not able to walk well or far. With there being so little space on the streets to park, I think it would be a grand idea to rent the small vehicles such as a Bird Bike or golf cart. The money from those rentals could be another source of funding for the cemetery. So - it would be a win-win for everyone. Other than the access for the handicapped, I would give it a 5 star.
Beautiful old cemetery has walking tours and audio driving tours, very informative visit to the past. Located in Memphis Tennessee.
Lots of stories and history here in a beautiful midtown location. Self guided and special historic tours available.
Great driving tour- the audio guided tour is available to download for $10 online so the visitor’s cottage does not need to be open to buy the tour. So much interesting information- stories about the people buried here and how they played a part in Memphis's history. It’s about an hour and 20 minute audio, but you’ll want to stop a few times to get out and see markers up close. We spent a little under two hours here. If you like history and quirky information about the city then you’ll like this tour.
This is a very historical site with so much of Memphis history. The gravestones are extricate and beautiful. There is a confederate soldier section, an odd fellow section and a free mason section. There is an audio tour you can download and really get some historical facts and interesting tidbits. I recommend this highly
Went here with my son's field trip from school and was very impressed. Our guide had so much historic information we could've stayed there all day. There is so much history to learn about Memphis from these graves that you will have a better appreciation for this city.
