Home of the Original Sheepherder Bread - 1938

Story

The Original Sheepherder Bread® 1938 was introduced to the Owens Valley during the California Gold Rush by immigrant Basque sheepherders who missed the bread of their homeland. They shaped loaves of their traditional bread by hand, used stone ovens for baking, and produced the first sheepherder bread. Even today we shape the loaves by hand and bake in the finest European Stone Hearth Ovens. The Original Sheepherder Bread® 1938, as well as all other delicious products, are made of only the purest ingredients: Well water from the Sierras, stone ground unbleached flour, and never any chemicals. Just like our bread, our pastries are made with only the finest ingredients. Real butter, grade AA eggs, unbleached flour, cane sugar, and artesian well water. We go to the growers to inspect and purchase our almond paste, pecans, and walnuts. Please enjoy our high quality products.

BUYER BEWARE! This is NOT the Schat's Bakery it used to be! Sold to another person the bread quality has decreased from its former 5 star level! The "Extra Sourdough" bread is AS flavorless and soft as white bread. The "Cinnamon Raisin" bread has holes the size of golf balls (literally). Though still a good tourist stop, it no longer has the high quality baking behind the original Schat's Bakery. Too bad. But as a welcome stop in the middle of the western desert? Not bad.

Large bakery with every imaginable baked item you could want. Came in late in the day to grab a few items for dessert ... Ordered four single items from the sweets cabinet.. two truffles, a pumpkin something, and a chocolate covered macron. The girl went back to the case for the items, bagged then and we paid. When we got to our hotel after dinner we opened the bag. No chocolate covered macron. So the employees are not able to remember any order larger than 3 items.. Make sure you personally watch them load you bag or check it before you walk away. The truffles were excellent. I have no idea on the macrons......

World-wide classic. I have driven on 395 through Bishop on no less than 30 round trips. Schat's is my "go to" place to eat and be recharged. The food is simply amazing. Fresh. Delicious. Filling. The staff is friendly, despite the large number of customers. The number of differnt languages spoken by the foreign travelers who stop to eat there is fun to count. There is a new Deli in town. I almost went there just to try something new, until I read all of the excellent reviews of the new Deli, which seemed to be written by friends of the new Deli and aimed at stating false information about the competitor Schat's. I dream of eating at Schat's on my trips from Reno to Southern California - even though I have traveled to and eaten in 49 USA states and 40 countries!

Nice store, full of different baked products. Lines were long but moved pretty quickly and the food was reasonably priced. Food could have been better tasting but the ambiance is worth a visit.

Wonderful selection of fresh breads. Make great gifts for your friends and family back home. Can get very busy on Sunday afternoons with the crowds of Sierra visitors driving through Bishop. Look in the back for "one day fresh" discounted items.
