Unexpectedly great. The tasting menu was exceptionally thought out. For 6 adults who were celebrating a birthday with plenty to drink and eat expect to spend about $100-$150/person.Food: 5/5
I visited here because of attracting attention through several platforms. Most of the dishes on the menu were unique, so it took longer than usual to hear the detailed menu explanation from the staff and think about what to choose. Around the time of choosing the menu to order and requesting an order, an employee approached and was informed that there was a 90-minute regulation after sitting, so after 90 minutes of reservation time, if a reservation person came, we would have to give up their seats. Immediately after we getting the 90-minute regulation explanation, the beverage staffa tall Asian man approached the table and explained the 90-minute meal rule guide once again, saying, "You've already spent more than 30 minutes choosing the menu to order." I didn't feel good when I heard this comment, but since it was my first time visiting the restaurant, I decided to have a good time while eating a new menu. The food I ordered was not tasty enough to meet the expectations, but it tasted above average. It took a little more than 90 minutes to finish the meal, but there was no rush to leave the table due to the enough of seats in the later hours. However, the employeea tall Asian man took charge of the payment and processed the calculation process with the Toast device at the table. After entering the tip, additional time was needed to receive the receipt by e-mail, but the employee said, "There is no need to leave a separate review," and tried to take the device in a hurry even though the input was not finished. Usually, I go into the restaurant's SNS account to look at the employee who received a good impression, but this time, I looked through all the restaurant's Instagram account posts because I was curious about who the employee was curtly responding to customers. It seems that he has been working at a restaurant for a long time, but I was curious if he had been working that way before. This restaurant's first visit is likely to be the last.
Firstly, the space is so cozy and inviting; it feels like your cool best friend's living room. We started with a beer from Grimm $9 and glass of wine $15. The food was absolutely amazing; Dad's Fried Rice $24 had the perfect chewy texture and was loaded with meat. The Blazed and Glazed $28 pork shoulder came with a delicious salsa verde that I could not get enough of. The prices seem higher, but there's more food than it seems and we were absolutely stuffed. Every person on the staff, from the host to our server, was so attentive and friendly.
The food was delicious and the service was great. However, as we ordered way too much food, we barely ate the lamb and asked to have most of it to go. Unfortunately only when we got home, we realised that half of the dish was missing all the vegetables and tortillasFood: 5/5
So so disappointed. I have no idea how this place got such high reviews. Dad’s egg rolls- $12 two small spring rolls, $6 each, no particular flavor tasted very generic. Mixed greens with dried shrimp in lobster broth- waiter described it at an umami bomb. I have never had pea shoots taste so bland. The dried shrimps had no flavor how is that even possible?!, lobster broth tasted of hot water. This was by far the worst dish. I dumbed the left over fish sauce from the egg rolls in it to give it some flavor. Monk fish in spicy red curry- was the best dish bc it was the only one with flavor. Once again overpriced but the little monkfish that was in there 5 slices was tasty and well cooked. Better even then the monkfish was the few pieces of chopped mushrooms in it bc they had a grill char on them they were not whole ones just little chipped up pieces. Also in the dish was a few pieces of a green veg that looked like broccolini but I’m sure was something else. The curry was coconut based and tasted like an average Thai curry but was at least spicy. Beef Skewers- they put just enough ground beef on the skewer to cover the wood stick, the value on this dish was laughable. There was barely any beef on the damn stick it was so thin. Came with a cut up lamb sausage which was tasty but came on a bowl of plain rice glass noodles. That dish we ate half of and threw the rest away. $130 down the train on a bad meal. I’m so disappointed and sad bc this place I read was excellent. I think it’s a typical example of a place opened up awhile ago got great reviews and stopped trying. I would never go back or suggest it. What a shame.
I’ve been intrigued by this spot for a while for its claim to meld Vietnamese and Mexican cuisines, and overall it’s a winning combination. The space is nice and chill and service was friendly. And while some dishes were better than others, I was impressed with the dishes and the synergies between the two cuisines. The result was flavor combinations that were new but made a lot of sense and just popped. Standouts included a tostada with fresh seafood that you topped with fish sauce and Birds Eye chile and a congee with corn and duck confit. If I had one issue, it would be our decision to go with the tasting menu. We were taken in by the fact that it was comprised of dishes not on the regular menu and we might get to sample more. But in retrospect, we hadn’t tried the regular menu so anything would’ve been new to us, and the dishes on the tasting menu are normal size so you don’t really get to try more. And compared to the regular menu it’s not a great value. The one nice thing though was the wine pairing, which they do offer in both 3 and 5 glass options. We went with the 3 and found the selections to be well matched and good value. So all in all, a conditional 5 stars but I do look forward to returning and trying the regular menu - especially the duck neck which sounds amazing.
Honestly wasn’t that impressed. While I understand it’s a Vietnamese-Mexican fusion restaurant, given all the great reviews, I expected solid Vietnamese food… but that was not the case. Like many Viet cuisines in NYC, ‘modernizing’ dishes seems to be the thing, but I personally think that’s a mistake. At this point, I need to stop going to the more high-end Viet spots if I want true Vietnamese food. Side note, the day we went for dinner, there was a sketchy car show happening right outside the restaurant. Cars were revving their engines obnoxiously throughout the entire duration of our meal, which really ruined our time. Asked the staff what’s going on, but no one seemed to care. Truthfully, this only turned me off more about this restaurant. Not worth making the trek over here in my opinion.
Food is amazing. I dream about the Nam Dua mushrooms, greens, noodles. The mackarel spicy green curry is a close second. And if you like duck, the duck neck is so succulent and innovative as a dish. Last dish below is the beef skewers The only downside is they were out of everything when we were there - the black bass, the orange wine we wanted a second glass of, the hemp kombucha and one other item. It was pretty awkward
I thought I came to a friend’s living room when I arrived Falansai. The indoor space is elegant yet cozy. We walked through the kitchen and entered into this tropical backyard decorated with thatch, graffiti and lotus pond, which all integrate very well. The dishes were exquisite, innovative and full of flavors. The green curry is spicy, citrusy and creamy, which made the seasonal vegetables extraordinarily tasty. The pork shoulder was grilled and glazed perfectly. Overall the dishes were on a bit salty for me, but the sparkling water was complimentary: The last but not the least, the service was phenomenal!
One of the better restaurants in NYC for a while. It's an interesting Vietnamese fusion with clean and distinct taste and great service. My favourites were tuna rice cracker and duck necks among the smaller dishes and for the larger ones the mackerel in curry and pork with rice and egg were divine. They also have a great selection of wines and the decor is super cool. Definitely one of the nicer Bushwick places at the moment
