I have been a fairly regular customer buying alcohol from Festival several years. Their service elsewhere in the store is fine, but I can almost guarantee you'll eventually have a weird experience at the alcohol counter. Generally speaking, it seems almost some sort of requirement for the clerks that work at that counter to make mildly-offensive jokes to customers. I've worked in customer service and sales extensively, including at alcohol serving/selling venues, and I must say my latest encounter takes the cake. I set my four pack of Guinness on the counter and opened my wallet to pay. My driver's license was partly visible. Instead of asking me for my ID politely like a normal human being, the older woman with medium-length, dirty blonde hair simply stared at me, then down at my wallet, and back at me again. It was mental. I waited a few seconds, and then asked if she would like to see it. She nodded and I handed her my ID. She looked at it, back up at me, and down at my ID again. Then she motioned to hand me back my ID, and when I reached for it she pulled it back quickly and interjected, "there's hair on this." ... Which I assume referred to the fact that my photo on it had me with facial hair, and I had recently shaved. I asserted that I had another form of identification and pulled out my U.S. passport card and set it on the counter (coincidentally I have no beard in that picture...). She ignored it and gave me my driver's license back. Here are a few pro tips for Festival to improve their boomerang policy: 1) Unless you want me "boomeranging" in and out of other stores in the neighborhood, you should critically review the customer service skills of it's employees at the alcohol counter 2) ...Try verbally "Asking" for my ID. I have struggled with severe social anxiety for my whole life, and yet this simple step has never been a problem for me in similar job roles that I have had. Staring at me and my wallet like a buffoon is awkward and more than a tad irritating. I have absolutely no qualms about forking over my ID when it is requested, as the risk of the clerk and facility receiving hefty fines for not doing so is simply not worth it for anybody. But this... This was a simple case of a clerk having an attitude and attempting to abuse whatever small amount of authority was afforded to her at her job. Honestly, I know it sucks and is very annoying that some people have an attitude about producing their ID upon request in this situation. However, that should have no bearing on my own experience as a customer who is willing to produce his ID upon request. I just... Would like to be asked instead of stared at like a criminal. In the future, I will be taking my business elsewhere, hopefully where the employees aren't so rattled by the minority of customers that the rest of us have to suffer through awkwardness.
