Story

Holding command over the Southern Plains, Fort Griffin served as one in a line of western defensive forts from 1867 to 1881. Among the ruins are a mess hall, barracks, first sergeant’s quarters, bakery, powder magazine and hand-dug well. Fort Griffin State Historic Site is also home to the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd, the breed that helped create the Texas cowboy mystique. For a true taste of the old west, the site offers camping, fishing, hiking, stargazing and living history.

I recently got back to Dallas after spending the night camping here. It was a spur of the moment road trip with friends and we really enjoyed it all. Mr. Abercrombie at the office was very welcoming and proud of his work which is refreshing being as the big city is a different story. I highly recommend Fort Griffin for anyone wanting to get away for the weekend, or to Stargaze. Being able to see so many stars was breath taking and is the only reason why I decided to make the trip. Well worth the drive from DFW

I have been going to FG for nine years. Clean and a great place for local history. Jane in the office can tell you anything about the area and is a local treasure for the history of this region. Plus there is a plethora of books available about local history. Lot of cool, old things to see in the area and the office can hook you up. Our favorite thing to do at FG is nothing! Just relax, listen to the coyotes, turkey, and Longhorns!

Wonderful staff. Very accommodating for astronomers. Dark skys. Four 30/50 amp sites set off from the rest of the campground for stargazing. Interesting Texas history. About 15 miles from fuel, groceries, & dining in Albany.
