Story

The Friends of Fort Ontario is a not-for-profit educational organization with tax exempt status under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Organization was formed in 1989 to encourage community participation in the programs, assist in the preservation and enhancement of the collection of artifacts and documents, develop and conduct educational programs, services and activities which will broaden the experience of a visitor, sponsor fundraising events which will lead to improvements and engage in other activities which are in harmony with the operation of the Fort Ontario State historic Site.

We continue to operate as an all volunteer organization. This has been accomplished and maintained by an effective collaboration facilitated through the Memorandum of Understanding that the Friends of Fort Ontario and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation operate by.

This site was a wonderful visit for my family. My kids particularly enjoyed looking through the buildings and across Lake Ontario from atop of the earthen works. The site is quite well kept and maintained, the staff are knowledge and engaging. Plan to spend at least 2 hours exploring the buildings the displays inside and the surrounding grounds. Admission is low and it is a great place to visit as a family.

Fort Ontario is an interesting place. This was my first time going to upstate NY. First time to Lake Ontario. The Fort was so remote and rugged in it's time of use. Winter is Coming. 🤓

Very well taken care of after years of being underwhelming. This is by far one of my favorite places in New York State.

A lot of history to be seen, videos inside explain A lot of it and you can either take the guided tour or wander the grounds with guide's tour map.
