Our mission remains: to collect and preserve; research and exhibit; and teach and advocate the history of Freeport, Maine.
We work to accomplish our mission by (1) making our archives and artifact collections accessible to students, scholars, Freeporters, and visitors for research and study; (2) “raiding” the Collections and presenting them to public via exhibits and other public programs to broaden and deepen Freeport’s history and by producing a quarterly newsletter; (3) stewarding and maintaining public access to two National Register properties-Pettengill Farm and Harrington House; advocating for the preservation of historic landscapes and buildings; and (4) collaborating with a range of organizations and individuals who care about the mission of keeping Freeports past present.
FHS owns two properties listed in the National Register. Harrington House, located in Freeport village at 45 Main Street, houses our exhibits, research area and archives, and business offices. We also own Pettengill Farm, a two-hundred year-old, 140-acre saltwater farm located 1.5 miles from Harrington House. Both are open to the public.
