Frontenac Bakery was established in 1900 by George Vacca, an Italian immigrant. Prior to coming to Frontenac, Vacca was a baker in northern Italy. He came to southeast Kansas to work in the coal mines. After injuring his knee in a mining accident, he went back to baking here in Frontenac, Kansas. He had brought his family recipe for hard-crust Italian bread with him and it is still used today. That is how and why Frontenac Bakery came to life!
The Frontenac Bakery provides 500 to 700 loaves of bread to Jim's Steakhouse in Pittsburg and all six chicken restaurants located in Crawford County including Chicken Annie's, Chicken Mary's, Pichler's Chicken Annie's, Chicken Annie's Girard, Barto's Idle Hour and Gebhardt's.
Additionally, the bakery bakes breadsticks, bread crumbs, dinner rolls, stuffing and cinnamon rolls that are sold to local grocery stores in Crawford County
