Galena Illinois is a small town with a large history. The Galena Historical Society does an excellent job of presenting the history of the area. The museum has several interactive areas that are great for kids. I recommend visiting the museum before visiting the Historical Sites.

This was a great little museum that gave a nice overview of all the historically significant stuff you should know about Galena. I enjoyed learning about the mining history the most. They even have a real mine shaft in the building that you can check out.

Very formative museum about Historic Galena's past. Starting with Civil War President Ulysses Grant to the Lead Iron Mines to the Steam boats that delivered the Lead as well as the decline of usage to steamboats. Has actually self portrait paintings of Ulysses Grant which is 9 ft high as well as other civil war paintings. Learned that President Grant was part of the Mexican American War and was a popular president in both Japan and Britain during the mid 19th century. Was interesting. Worth $10 for admission. Wish I could have gone to his historic house too.

This museum had some top-notch artifacts and displays. However, some of the interpretive signs were of lower quality. Well worth the stop. My wife and I went here first on our day trip to Galena, and we felt well oriented for the rest of the day.

One of the most important paintings is in the museum I've looked at this painting in books and thought it probably hung in DC or Smithsonian all the while it's in Galena Illinois the museum focusing on the civil war especially General Grant and troops from Galena .Great source for books on the civil war
