Staff were very knowledgeable about the history of the building and the area. Helped that we were there on on open house day. Very interesting buildings and pieces in the collection. We enjoyed learning about the history of the area as well as the history of the tunnels below.

The General Adam Stephen House, home of the founder of the city of Martinsburg, has been restored with period furnishings. Docents lead tours of the two stories of the home that are open to the public on special occasions. The Christmas celebration typically focuses on how the holidays would be observed by an 18th century Scottish family. A cave under the house leads to tunnels that early settlers used as safe places, and later generations of kids used to travel from house to house underground. When you visit, asked to be shown the cave entrance. If the right docent is on hand, he may take you to see it.

I go here once a year for the historical Christmas show they put on. It's a different show every year. Everyone is dressed for that time period.
