Exactly What's Needed! We were looking for some quiet time away from the otherwise crazily busy and stressful environment that is typical lowland Montana (just kidding) and this really hit the spot. It's quite a trek back to it via two track, but slow and steady wins the race and gets lots of recorded memories by way of plentiful pics. We passed cows, ram sheep, mule deer, whitetail, and even a fanning spruce grouse! Someone was kind enough to build a shallow stone indicator for the final turn up to where we were able to park at the base of the final approach to the lookout (long story, we missed the turn at 11pm the previous year and ended up having to drive home for poor planning on our part and want of familiarity with the lookout's location). Do keep in mind the lookout sign is a solid mile from where you can actually park. So if you've found the sign, keep going. The 250yd hike up to the lookout is maybe 20-25% grade at the worst of times, so no big deal. The vista is absolutely incredible! Pintlers to the southeast, Bitterroots to the west and we could just make out Ch-paa-qn Peak by line of sight up the valley to the north-northwest. As much as we wanted to get away from the association with civilization the moonset over the lights of Hamilton were quite pretty at midnight and merely turning our heads afforded us the awesome spectacle of the Milky Way. The lookout is like every other lookout we've stayed in albeit better equipped; cooking stove, two gas lanterns, wash bins, books, games, sleeping pads, cooler... everything you could possibly need really. There was even some restored sanity tucked away in the nooks and crannies if you really spent the time looking for it. PS: Shoutout to O'so Brewing in Wisconsin for providing the vintage 2012 Sweet Lady stout to help commemorate the spreading of some family member's ashes.
