I have been coming here for at least 45 years. I don't live here anymore and this used to be my mother's favorite place. So I was in town decided to stop in have a little lunch and it didn't disappoint. Same owners same food, so yummyFood: 5/5
Pros- Easy parking right in front of the restaurant. Arrived just after 7 PM on a Friday, and it was not busy inside. I think this location is much busier for lunch. The dining room appeared clean and orderly. They have a large menu but an even larger special board, when you walk in, to choose from. The food arrived quickly and was very delicious with good-sized portions. Usually you can choose any table in the dining room you would like. Waters were constantly refilled. At the end of your meal, they will bring to-go boxes before you even need to ask. I ordered the tofu and mushrooms with steamed rice and the sauce was incredibly flavourful even without the heat. . Cons- Menu modifications are not a problem, but everything comes with an up-charge. As soon as we sat down, the server tried to get our order, but we were not ready, so she instructed us that when we were ready to order, to look over at her and wave. Surprisingly, the rice that comes with your meal is a very small portion, and if you ask for more, that is an additional charge. Also, if you want hot sauce on the side, that too is an additional charge. We sat at a round table with a spinning lazy-susan in the center, but when the food came out, the server awkwardly reached to hand them to us, instead of simply using the lazy-susan to spin it around to each person. I believe the server was slightly upset when I did not realize she was handing the rice to me when I was still getting the dinner plate sat in front of me. They do offer a choice of heat levels from mild to medium to hot. I chose the medium and could not taste any heat at all, so I would probably recommend getting a hot because if you try to get hot sauce on the side, they will charge you! I think what bothered me the most was that when she presented the checks, she expected immediate payment from everybody. I WAS STILL EATING! She said that she did not want to make multiple trips to run the credit cards, so she expected us to pay all at once! She handed us several extremely dirty pens to sign our credit slips. And I really wish they would get new pens. She made sure to return and get the signed credit slips before we ever stood up. This felt awkward to us. I honestly don't understand the rush because they were still open for another hour+, after we paid. . Maybe our server was having an off day, but I could see other servers that were much friendlier and knew how to smile that we may request to be with them on our next visit. Vegetarian options: Best tofu that I've tasted.
We really enjoyed our lunch here and will go back! We ordered a bowl of soup and split it; it wasn't my favorite, but my husband liked it. I ordered Generals chicken - it's not like the traditional General Tsos, BUT... it's good. Very crunchy- great breading. The sauce it different but I liked it, very rich flavors! My husband ordered Kung Pao Chicken and it was wonderful!
Ordered Chicken/pork fried rice and Kung pao chicken online. The fried rice was the regular house pork fried rice with boiled then sliced chicken shoved on top of the pork fried rice. Needless to say it was HORRIBLE! I asked for no peppers in my Kung Pao chicken and it of course had tons of them and had approximately 6 small pieces of chicken. Mind you I paid $40 and it all ultimately ended up in the trash. Chicken fried rice should have chicken fried with it and Not boiled chicken strips!
Don’t judge a book by its cover in this case! Apparently my husband used to come here with his parents in late 70”s and through 80’s. It’s delish. Food piping hot and the service was good. The only thing is no flavor in the egg flower soup but just add soy sauce. It brought out great flavor. My moo goo gai pan was delicious and so is my husband’s spicy chicken and then we got some sweet-and-sour chicken to go and my husband got pork and seeds which he loves. Hot tea was good not just watery. And they have a Boise best looks like a pretty fresh placard on the wall- yes 2023. We will definitely and come again.
Service was friendly.. Food was good.. Restaurant was clean We got a combo for two.. Pork and seeds Crab Rangoon Fried Rice Beef & Shrimp Stir-fry Mandarin Chicken House Chow Mein Only item not our favorite was Mandarin Chicken... Sauce was pure vinegar but chicken not covered in sauce was delicious Was surprised at quality of Beef and Shrimp! Really really high quality & so yummy.. Chow mein was my favorite dish hands down! Definitely recommend
The quality of food continues to go down. Had a late dinner Saturday ordered sweet-and-sour spareribs and fried rice. The sweet-and-sour spareribs were like they were at the bottom of their container came out mostly shreds just very low quality food. I understand it was late, but they should’ve told me they were out and instead of serving, such poor quality food. Services is always friendly. so disappointed after eating at Golden Star since I was a child close to 50 years. Food has been sliding for a while now
The food was just okay but the service was great. Staff is very polite and quick at their job. My family used to come here a lot but haven't much in recent years. I think either the quality of the food went down or our taste buds must of changed. For dinner the price isn't that great either considering what you receive. Lunch specials seem decently priced.
I grew up in Boise and this place looks exactly the same as it did when I was a kid. Always outstanding service, good food. My absolute favorite is the "grilled" halibut which is an unusual find at an old school place like this. Also, either the house chow mein or the special chow mein, whichever has the little noodles -- it's awesome. Highly recommend.
As someone who’s been to a lot of genuine, authentic, and American Chinese restaurants I was surprised this place was rated more than 4 stars. The sweet and sour short ribs tasted too strongly of vinegar, the noodles were tasteless, the environment was not good in general. I only came because of the high score, not planning on coming back.
