Story

Founded in 1957 as a nonprofit organization, Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee’s mission is changing lives through education, training and employment. At Goodwill, we believe in giving a hand up, not a handout — a saying coined by Goodwill’s founder, the Rev. Edgar J. Helms. In the early 1900s, Helms performed missionary work in the slums of Boston. He hired the poor and needy to mend and repair used goods that he collected from wealthy Bostonians. The refurbished items were resold and given to the people who did the repair work, the basis for the mission of Goodwills throughout the U.S. and abroad. Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee is based in Nashville, Tenn. The agency employs more than 2,000 people and serves 48 counties throughout Middle and West Tennessee. We operate 33 retail stores and three outlets, more than 75 donation sites and eight Career Solutions offices. Goodwill is one of Middle and West Tennessee’s largest employer of people with disabilities with more than 88 percent of our workforce reporting some type of disability or disadvantage. Although affiliated with Goodwill Industries International in Bethesda, Md., we operate independently through our own governing board of directors. Goodwill accepts gently-used items that donors no longer want, need or use. Those items are sold either in our retail stores or online at onlinegoodwill.com. Revenue from the sale of donated goods helps fund job training services and programs provided by Goodwill Career Solutions. In addition to retail sales, Goodwill depends on several other revenue sources, including state and local grants.

Arrive, not super busy but after checking out the crowd there is lone cart... Yay. As I make my way to claim said cart I hear "ma'am that's my cart" I turn to check where the source of the statement. Behold the cashier on duty. The worker seems to be doing between customer perusing, as well as holding up the last cart in the store. Keep in mind, I've worked retail. Never before have I heard of anywhere you shop while working, let alone keeping items from costumers.

Came here for books and they have a room sectioned off with a large variety. Paperbacks were a dollar! Found a nice fleece zip jacket for the winter for $6. Men's clothing selection is very stylish and doesn't look like they came from a thrift store. Female clothes are older looking and appear to be washed too many times.

99 cent Outlet has GREAT prices but most of the things are in huge bins so it is hard to find something you need. Also 50% of it looks like garbage, but at least you don't pay too much for something if you can find it.

This has become the garbage can of Goodwill. The Ft Campbell Blvd location is now a 99¢ outlet. Seriously, everything is 99¢. Giant cardboard bins of clothing rejects. I am sad.

Love that I can find some homeschool books at goodwill. Also love that we have a few different locations in the area so if one doesn't have what I'm looking for I have other places to check. :-)
