Owner and Master Framer: Douglas Nielsen

At Grand Hill Gallery, all work is done on site. Owner and Master Framer, Doug Nielsen, is a gifted designer carrying nearly 3,000 frame samples. His wonderful designs and outstanding customer service has keep customers coming back for over 30 years.

Owner and Master Framer: Douglas Nielsen

Born in 1946, St. Paul artist Doug Nielsen has been in the art and picture framing business for 33 years. His creative custom picture framing is displayed on the walls of thousands of homes, businesses, and even cabins throughout the Midwest. His own original paintings are also displayed in several hundred locations. The last 15 years have seen greater emphasis on original oil paintings.

Doug has spent a great deal of time studying the work of the masters, both old and current, with special interest in the American Impressionists of the late 1800’s to the 1930’s. He says that the advantages of being self taught are the ability to study whomever you wish and the opportunity to make lots of mistakes, hopefully to learn from. He feels that his current work, done both plein aire and studio, expresses both a sense of place and a time of day and season. Many are familiar scenes that remind the viewer of their own experiences.

Doug is continuing to strive for the perfect picture, a quest never quite achievable. It’s the quest that really matters and brings him to many extraordinary Minnesota and Wisconsin locations.
