About

Every year, hundreds of Sonoma County schoolchildren visit Miss Hallberg and her Gardens to learn about the life cycle of our local butterflies.

Story

Nestled among the apple orchards of Western Sonoma County, the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens cover nine acres of overgrown vines and thickets, flowering pathways and meadows.

While visitors to the gardens may witness the wondrous metamorphosis of the butterfly, even more important may be their own transformation as they experience a new awareness of nature.

To date, more than 40 varieties of butterflies are known to have visited the gardens. Attracted by the many flowers that offer nectar, the butterflies, in turn, help to pollinate the nectar plants. Female butterflies seek out larval food plants to lay their eggs. When the young caterpillars emerge, they can begin eating right away.

Mission

By sharing the knowledge of butterflies and providing for their habitat, we seek to promote and inspire the appreciation and conservation of the wonders of nature.

It is my fervent wish to enhance and preserve the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens so that future generations will always have the opportunity to behold the beauty of nature's wonderful miracle - the butterfly.

Nice place. I went on an open-house day last year. You wander around the grounds along the pathways and can spot different butterflies along the way. They also have informative displays about the butterflies there and the history of the grounds. I din't see a lot of butterflies when I was there, but did see some. It seemed to be towards the end of the flower season and also, we didn't have many rains in CA. This year, with all of the rain, it might be even better! There is a long dirt road that you may have to walk down. There were golf cart shuttles provided for the open-house. Not sure if that's always the case. Maybe on regular days, you can park closer.
