Harris-Stowe State University founded in 1857, is an affordable, accessible and culturally diverse historically Black university in the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

Mission

Harris-Stowe State University's primary mission, as set forth in Senate Bill 153, is to address the higher education needs of the metropolitan St. Louis region. Toward the fulfillment of this mandate, the University offers a solid General Education curriculum, which serves as the foundation for the University's various baccalaureate* programs in three broad professional areas, including baccalaureate degree programs in business, education, and arts and sciences.

In addition, the University is thoroughly committed to meeting to the greatest extent possible the needs of a student population that is diverse in age, culture, ethnicity and experiential backgrounds. In short, Harris-Stowe State University is strongly committed to providing a high-quality higher education experience that is both affordable and accessible to the diverse populations within and beyond the metropolitan St. Louis region. The University seeks to accomplish this overarching goal through an extensive academic support program, a college-preparatory academy for urban youth, supervision of student progress and through many community outreach and collaborative partnerships with businesses, government and educational institutions.

this place is horrible security do nothing if you report it and choice to help students they became friends with , i was attacked by another student and i was the one suspended from the university while the attacker was able to walk free and still go which in there terms says he should be kicked out permanently while i fought the suspension.  Also a good majority of the teachers only see you as a number i had a teacher who would let class out within 5 to 10 minutes when it was a hour and 40 minute class and another that refused to make sure everyone understood the problems and projects. if you go only go for a semester and don`t expect to have a happy college experience

I was very briefly interested in the daycare on the campus until I received incredibly rude and unacceptable service from a male answering the daycare phone. Earlier I had spoke to someone who seemed okay and was willing to transfer me to the accounting dept to inquire about cost. Later in the afternoon, a particular person refused to transfer me like the previous person did and said to call the operator. So I called the operator and asked for the accounting dept for the daycare and she transferred me back to the same rude male employee answering the daycare phone. I decided that if i cannot even get through to the dept that I need to speak to, on at least 2 occasions, then why would I ever trust them with a child?! Will never recommend to anyone! Save yourself the headache and hassle from dealing with miserable people who hate their job at the college and daycare and go elsewhere! God bless.

Stop saying Harris Stowe is racist. Its an hbcu, if you feel out of place then don't enroll.  Nobody is forcing you to enroll at an historically black college. Great school with good people.

A great historic institution of higher learning which was founded way back in 1857 with awesome campus, great faculty and staff, excellent housing facilities, outstanding location and position in the heart of the city, good students and fabulous IT, computer lab, library, parking, and dinning services at a very affordable cost. 
Come on down. What are you waiting for?

Encouraged to see more positive reviews. I graduated from here in 1978..  All my teachers/professors  were pretty good!!!! I never bought a book In two years. I transferred in from community college after accumulating a dismal 1.5 GPA......While at Harris I  Attended 60% of my classes.  Enrolled in 36 hours FOR ONE semester and pulled a 3.8 GPA. For it.  Took 21 hours in summer school over an 8 week period and pulled a 4.0 GPA.  Had a. Whopping  42% semester GPA. In a children's literature class and got an A because. I had the highest average  on the grading curve!!!!! Graduated with a 3.5 GPA.  And crossed the stage with folks that could not read.  ( seriously ) .   my son went here for a year. In 2013-2014.  Half the time teachers did show up for class. After he had driven 35 miles to get there.    On several occassions he was asked to leave learning lab or library because a teacher wanted to eat her lunch and listen to music in there and threatened to call security on him for wanting to stay and study. (HSSU fixed that problem when informed about it)
