WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
The "Haul Over" refers to an area of the eastern side of Nantucket Island, North of Wauwinet and south of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife refuge. From at least the early 1800s until the mid 1900s, the fisherman of Nantucket would pull their boats from the Harbor and "Haul" them "Over" this narrow spit of beach in order to reach the more fertile fishing grounds to the east and south of the island, without navigating out of the harbor and all the way around Great Point. In our eyes, it is the perfect representation of that particular New England ingenuity and rugged determination that it requires to live on a place 30 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean.
