Monica was our GAL because the first attorney recommended to the court wouldnt do phone mediation. My attorney then suggested Monica to be our GAL (meaning she represented my daughter's interests in a case about changing her father's parenting time since the court granted me permission to move out of state 12 hrs for a new job...and because my ex owes over $20k in child support and refused to watch her while I traveled with my previous job). Since the process took so long i decided to come in person to meet with Monica and bring my daughter to visit her father.  When we contacted her to schedule our visits her office didnt know who we were. When she interviewed me face to face she even admitted she had no info on our case. My attorney's office said she never did request it, either. I drove back 15 hours for my daughter and I's appointment and she clearly had formed her opinion before I sat down.  She was completely unprepared and had no info on our case. After interviewing me once for 20 minutes, my daughter for a similar length of time, my ex husband twice, she was never to be heard from again. 3 months later I left several messages and so did my attorney. Only then did she call one of my 4 witnesses. She also called my attorney because she didn't understand her notes from 3 months prior. One example of her dishonesty is she asked my attorney to verify a pay cut I received and they explained to her how it was a cut in gross but not in take home pay since i no longer had to travel with this job change and hire a nanny and she still reported false information to the court. Her report and recommendations were based on her personal opinion without facts. She gave my ex husband more time than he even wanted....despite my daughter never spending Christmas or Thanksgiving or Easter with him 4 of the 7 years she has been alive she recommended my daughter spend every Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter...every single year because of a very rude email I sent him 2 years ago. He had moved back home after that email proclaiming he wanted to work things out....stayed for 3 weeks and left again for the fourth time, yet this email somehow determined me to be controlling my ex. She also wrote that I was engaged twice and orders of protections were issued against both men per my ex.  There were zero orders of protection and I'd think an attorney would know how to verify that. I can online at the Macon County case lookup site. She never asked me about any of his accusations without verifying facts. She also recommended 6 weeks in the summer. My ex husband asked for one night a month....when we lived in Illinois he wanted two nights a month. Plus he cant afford gas money and she recommended we meet half way...a 13 hour drive for us both roundtrip at the start and end of my daughters visit with her dad. So neither of us ended up happy and my daughters best interest was not achieved and both parents who despise eachother agree! This lady lacks professionalism, her office is very unorganized, and she lied on her GAL report. It shocks me that she can still practice law in Decatur. Read her reviews on AVVO (not just the Attorney Monica Hawkins, but also listed as Monica Hawkins attorney). She has many reviews with similar comments. And google her Birdeye reviews which are equally disturbing.
 
**update** This attorney contacted my attorney threatening to file a motion because of this post.... which she said was "social media"  and not the actual google review site that I DID post to.... if I didn't remove my review. I think this speaks volumes of her integrity as a professional. The whole purpose of a review is to share your experience. She also said this post was unfair because I wasn't her client. I paid her $1k and I believe that makes me a consumer. This is America. If you want a good attorney who goes on facts and truly knows the law, go to Richard Hopp! He actually cares about people and doesn't see you as a quick dollar. He also does GAL work besides family law.
