Upstairs Heinle's General Store

Story

Located in the upstairs space above the historic Heinle’s General Store, we have created an unpretentious and friendly atmosphere and a place for fresh and delicious food. With an emphasis on locally grown ingredients – our flavors are both simple and complex – we have designed a unique culinary experience with beautifully presented, generous dishes.

The restaurant revolves around certain key concepts, such as rustic, local, comfort, and home cooking. You won’t find as good a meal, for as good a price, in the area.

From the smallest get-together to the largest celebration, Henning’s Local is a place for everyone. The experience calls to mind the honest pleasures of food one finds at an inn in southern France or at a local Italian trattoria, while retaining the relaxed, special atmosphere of the Catskills.

In order to showcase his love for good and honest food, Norwegian chef Henning Nordanger has built long term relationships with regional farmers, purveyors, winemakers, and other culinary artisans to ensure the best quality products available in the area. The restaurant is committed to contributing to the community through local purchasing and staffing.

Surrounded by so many hardworking and dedicated producers of fresh, local, and sustainable products, we consider it a great privilege to be part of the growing awareness of real food.

We live nearby. First time here. Good food, but omg a long wait for our entrees; like over an hour! $16 for a cheeseburger -- one of the least expensive entrees. Apologies offered; drinks paid for, but disappointed overall. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

Do not show up without reservations!! We did and we were seated at a very tall, uncomfortable bar table. If you are a tall person, this is not an issue, but I am only 5 feet tall. There was a long wait for our food to arrive, but that was because the restaurant was full. When it did arrive, it was absolutely delicious. The only other problem was partly my fault, having read the reviews I adhered to their no substitution rule and did not ask them to switch out the horseradish mash for a different one. As it happens, they would have exchanged it. This review started at 3 stars, but the host was kind enough to inquire about our experience and was very apologetic.

I would say definitely one of the best restaurants in the Catskills. Every time I'm in the Catskills I have no problem driving over an hour just to eat there. You won't be disappointed. The food is always so fresh.

If pleasing the customer is the goal for success in a good restaurant, Hennings is failing miserably. When I asked if I could have the other potato offering on the menu rather then the mashed, the answer was no and a person who said he was the manager arrived at our table and proceeded to give us a bizarre and illogical explanation. He actually said the "kitchen is too small" to switch the potatoes from one plate to another (even though they are both prepared and on the menu). We said ok. When our plates come, I will switch potatoes with my friend. He said he would put the mashed on a separate plate to make it easier. However, there was a $6 charge on our check which he didn't mention. On a previous visit, I was told that I could not have fewer fingerlings and more kale because, "kale is too expensive". Huh? One wonders if this dimwit is managing or sabotaging the restaurant, or both? - Managing to sabotage.
