About

Peek behind the scenes at the Henry Plant Museum. Travel back in time via historic trivia & etiquette tips from the Victorian era when Henry Plant - a self-made man, railroad & steamship magnate - built the most magnificent hotel of its day.

Story

When you’re building a railroad to nowhere, how do you make the journey worthwhile? …. If you’re railroad magnate Henry Bradley Plant, in the midst of the sand swamps that would be Tampa, you construct the most astonishingly magnificent hotel of its day, then fill it with treasures from around the world. With its splendid Moorish architecture, opulent furnishings, and spectacular tropical gardens, Plant’s Tampa Bay Hotel attracted a host of celebrated guests, from Teddy Roosevelt to Sarah Bernhardt to Babe Ruth. A visit to the Henry B. Plant Museum and the authentically restored rooms of the Tampa Bay Hotel will transport you back to a time of indulgent 10-course meals, waltzing on the verandah and alligator hunting by moonlight…The journey is still worthwhile.

Wonderful museum! When we entered we were introduced to the museum by a very friendly man, who clearly had a passion for his job. If we knew the museum was this great we would've planned more visiting time in stead of the 1 and ¼ hours we actually had. It's a very interesting look into the history of Tampa and also history of Florida. If we ever return to Tampa this museum will definitely be on our to-do list again, but then with at least 2 hours of time.

Nice place to see a little bit of Tampa history for a good half hour. You can do the tour for around 7 to 12 bucks depending on what she or if you are a student. It is amazing to see how nice and calm it is during the summer.

Small, but worth seeing and dwelling in. Good displays showing how Plant and his travel business literally put Tampa on the map.
