Story

The HI Ottawa Jail Hostel is probably the only jail in Canada you'll want to spend the night in! Formerly known as the Carleton County Gaol, this preserved heritage building guarantees a one-of-a-kind experience as you may spend the night in one of the former cells or take a tour of the 8th floor where death row inmates counted their last hours. Don't worry, we also offer all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay: a bar, a backyard patio, organized events, a kitchen, a FREE continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi access and much more.

Rooms: small like a jail cell, but at least clean (no mould, no spider webs). If you're expecting larger rooms, let me remind you, it's a HOSTEL. Also if you're a light sleeper BRING EARPLUGS! The doors have slits and sound travels really well in a jail. Bathrooms: separate male & female toilets; shared shower space with individual stalls. Cleanliness depends on the rest of the people living on your floor. People on my floor were very cleanly. Location: fantastic! Right beside Byward Market. Free breakfast: great variety! 3 kinds of fruit, 2 kinds of cereal, 5 kinds of morning drinks, and 3 kinds of bread spreads. Bagels felt like eating cardboard; I recommend toast instead. General impression: you get an authentic jail experience, but I wouldn't stay for more than 2 nights.

This hostel is really cool. It's very clean and the rooms are super spacious. They have a great free breakfast, you can choose between fresh bagels, toast, eggs, and fresh fruit. Plus tea, coffee and juice. I definitely recommend doing the jail tour as well! You can learn alot about the building and Ottawa's history! The hostel is located close to downtown, you can walk to any attraction and it's a safe area. The staff are very friendly! Definitely recommend staying here!

It was very clean and organized. All the staff were very nice and helpful. The complementary breakfast was during reasonable hours and served decent food. There are a lot of shopping places and restaurants within walking distance. The only thing is some rooms don't have a bathroom so you have to use a shared one for your floor.

Fun experience, really sells the staying in a jail vibe. Avoid if you want lots of space and super clean facilities. Didn't get a chance to really check out what the hostel had to offer but all in all cheap and cheerful and something different.

Very neat experience of staying in a former jail. Clean, well kept, friendly staff. Free breakfast. Kitchen usable to make meals in basement
