Hill Hardwood has about any type of wood you might be looking for. The owner is very knowledgeable about hardwoods. his prices are good also.

I'm not big on online reviews. I've provided only one other review in my life and as a business owner I tend to side with the luddites who prefer to let businesses sink or sail the old fashioned way: without mass, unregulated public comment. But I do feel we all have a responsibility to each other to provide warning in extreme instances such as fraud, abuse or real danger. I noticed that a couple other reviews of Hill were from people reporting abuse. My experience adds to the list of the abused. My girlfriend had told me that when she visited Hill last year while having her kitchen redone she had to walk backwards out the door while the owner yelled insults at her, stating "trees come from wood, honey," amongst other rebukes of her essentially walking through the door in search of a beautiful piece of maple to be used as a solid shelf. She is very petite, asian, and was alone in the shop with him and felt his behavior indicated he could be dangerous. I am now redoing my own kitchen and decided to give this owner the benefit of doubt- we all have bad days. We both went to Hill Hardwood two days ago. After working as a designer for 11 years, owning and renovating over a dozen homes and a few business, as well as building a home for myself in LA, I can say with confidence that I've never been treated with the disrespect and condescension that I experienced at Hill, where anyone who does not belong to the "club" is destined to be met with abuse. The owner began the conversation by making sure I wasn't a professional cabinet maker so that he could proceed to ramble out a list of why I would never be able to make good use of his wood, including the mention of a kick toe, apparently assuming I was unaware of the overhang common in base cabinets which provides room for the foot when close-facing ones counter. At one point he started pressing a large red button on his desk labeled "no" which actually produces an electronically voiced "no" with every pressing. Sadly, while my girlfriend and I are not professional woodworkers we do know our stuff, at least relative to a total layperson. We know our wood species, both work in design and both take pleasure in doing our own work. She's a trained jewelry maker, we are both trained artists, and generally good with our hands and with the awareness of geometry and engineering required in most any household construction project. In addition to construction and design I've been rebuilding acoustic guitars for 10 years- woodworking which is much more fine even than cabinet making and requires an education in both wood hardness, sound velocity and responses to physical dynamics much more complex than biscuit routing and edge gluing boards. The point in mentioning this is that if the owner of this store is willing to growl abuses at us as soon as we walk through the door, he's going to do so to anyone who isn't what he describes to be a "legacy" customer. He clearly takes thrill not in wood or in selling it, but in serving up the kind of abuse that could ruin anyone's day. I would recommend to anyone who doesn't have a working relationship with him to avoid Hill Hardwood at any cost.

I went there looking for some interesting hardwoods for a few woodworking projects. Ended up with some very well priced cherry, maple, and walnut boards. The boards were discounted because the "defects" were exactly what I was looking for!

My husband I went here to find a board(s) to finish our hardwood flooring after removing a wall. When we walked in the door a man asked what we needed and we said "we're not exactly sure what we're looking for, but we're hoping he can help us". The man reply "no". I thought he was joking/giving us a hard time at first, but there was no smile to follow. He began asking questions and we tried to explain the project we had, show him a picture and explain the wood we were looking for, but he kept interrupting and started walking towards his supply room like we should follow. I decided I'd let my husband do all the talking at this point. On the way he told my husband "you're freaking clueless" and after another 30 seconds of condescending conversation with my husband and pointing out a set of boards 3 shelves high in the supply room the man began walking back to his desk and started pushing numbers on his calculator. In the meantime my husband and I had exchanged a glance and knew it was time to leave, so we told him we will look elsewhere and left. The man actually looked surprised. Within less than 5 minutes of being there we were told we were freaking clueless at least 3 times, and made to feel like we were totally putting him out by shopping there. Maybe this is how he treats all of his customers or maybe he feels comfortable with the size of his current clientele. Regardless, I would never give that man my business or recommend anyone go there. We are going to try Lumber Liquidators in Marion.

Hill Hardwood Supply is one of the few places that you can still find a good selection of hardwood. The strengths of this business are large quantities available in a wide ranging species with someone who doesn't snap or charge you more for looking through their stack. I read one negative review here and all I have to say is that it doesn't matter what hardwood provider you go to they're all crotchety, maybe it has something to do with all the splinters they get??? If you don't know what FAS skip planed six quarter hardwood means then save yourself sometime and pay more at Menards -where they'll let you get away with ordering hardwood in framing lumber dimensions. The table top is laminate here but the base is of 12/4 poplar I got from Hill Hardwood.
