Historic Freight House

Story

The Milwaukee Road Freight House in Rapid City, South Dakota, United States, was built by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as The Milwaukee Road) in 1923 to store and ship freight. The building is single story, rectangular, and constructed of brick. Offices were placed at one end with warehouse space occupying the rest of the building. Large freight doors and bays are along each side. The circa 1915 depot is located east of the freight house. The Milwaukee Road built its line from eastern South Dakota to Rapid City in 1906-07. With the increase of tourists in the late 1910s, the railroad built the freight house. It was built of brick. The design was a modern one, based on other early 20th century commercial buildings. When The Milwaukee Road went bankrupt and abandoned its lines in South Dakota in 1980, it sold the freight house to local businesses for use as offices. The freight house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its association with The Milwaukee Road and railroad development in South Dakota.

Interesting atmosphere though there was a smell that I felt was like going to a garage sale. Food was fairly good but not as hot as I would have hoped for. Good selection on the menu and stuff that you can't find just anywhere. Service was excellent and easily a 5+. It doesn't have the energy it had back when it was sanford's but it's hard to complain about it being quiet at 6pm.

Service was great and we both enjoyed the atmosphere on the patio. Would really like this place if they did a new food menu. We got and pork and queso starter which was pretty bland. She got the street tacos, but they weren't street tacos. They reminded me of 50 cent tacos at a bar on taco Tuesday night. I ordered the tuna steak and my entire plate was pretty bland as well.

Lots of fried food. Interesting "art" on the walls. Lots of pop art. Some not very PC. We had the fried pickles with peanut butter and it was different. The pickles were spears and the breading stayed on. My mom had the fried appetizer mushrooms for dinner and it was a large portion. Service was ok. Place seemed crowded even though there were not a lot of people there. Napkins were paper towels on a dowel at each table.

This place has great brick of onions. Prices are reasonable when you look at how much food you get per plate..

There were 5 of us during the Rally and we always enjoyed eating at Sanfords (previous business). But now the food isn't the same. And most of ours were cold. Waitress said happy hour drinks n appetizers. Wrong, had to pay full price after she tricked us and no intentions of honoring Her Error!!
