The Town of Clayton is proud to own and operate its own municipal library, the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library. The library enjoys a historic setting along a tree-lined street in Downtown Clayton. Patrons can enjoy a full range of library services including a collection exceeding 90,000 books and books on CD, a wing dedicated to its extensive children's collection, public computer/internet access, special programming for children including a summer reading program, and the Clayton History Room which houses reference materials, family histories, and artifacts significant to the people and culture of Clayton.
Although the facility and collection are owned and operated by the Town of Clayton, the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library is affiliated with the Johnston County Library System and as such it shares books and services with other affiliated libraries. Although the Clayton Library had humble beginnings in a single room of the old "Town Hall" building, it now supports a circulation exceeding fifteen thousand books per month.
