Hood Mountain Regional Park has lots of steep terrain. Many of the trails are old roads, which is nice because it makes it easier to avoid the poison oak which is everywhere. The poison oak is so prevalent it makes many of the single track trails unusable. The highlights of the park include the cool lush riparian corridor along Santa Rosa Creek, the few open meadows, and stunning vistas. The most impressive vista being the view from Gunsight Rock. Neighboring Sugar Loaf Ridge State Park makes for a better destination for several reasons. It is more accessible by car, the trails are much better condition, far less poison oak, more access to cool creeks, an impressive waterfall, more camping, and Sugar Loaf has a public observatory. All for the same day use fee.

for a beginner hiker at the age of 53 the up hill mile and half was tough but the scenery was great. meet a few people on my hike who were all friendly.

If you go hiking here you better pack a lunch cuz you might take an accidental 5-mile hike like I did.
