Very frustrating experience. I hired Humboldt last month to move my parents from Florida to assisted living in Massachusetts. From the beginning my focus was on getting a defined schedule, since I needed to coordinate care for them on both ends and wanted to minimize the time they lived in a largely empty condo. The sales person said that she couldn't promise a specific date, "but we should be able to get there within a day or two of the target" So the United Truck that Humboldt scheduled arrived on a Tuesday to pack and load. My parents said the guys that showed up were very frustrated that they didn't have the right packing materials, so they were concerned about the process. As it turned out some of the wrong things got on the truck and some of the things were supposed to go did not get on. The truck was supposed to arrive 6 days later. I tried to call to confirm several times, and could get no information. Finally on the scheduled arrival date I get a call saying it "will be later in the week" No details. Finally three days later after multiple increasingly frustrated calls and emails, I get a call from Tim, one of the managers. He couldn't initially give me specific information either, because the truck was making multiple stops. But the next day he called and said the truck would be there Saturday, 11 days after the pick up. Then he called and said the truck broke down so it wouldn't be there until Sunday. The only good news was on Monday they sent some local unpackers to help organize things, who were helpful guys. And only a couple pieces were broken. During this period all of the caregivers were calling me daily trying to get information for their schedule. I had several thousand dollars of incremental care expenses. My parents were frustrated and confused about the schedule. And I found out later that I could have hire a dedicated truck to go pick everything up in half the time and 20% less cost than Humboldt. In no way was this a good experience. I would not hire them again.

Do not use Humboldt Moving and Storage (United Agent) or United Van Lines (unless you are OK with damaged furniture). I strongly recommend you take your move to another company. We’ve moved 19 times in my career. This is first move that ended this disastrously. Here’s the background: When, Dave MacDonald, the sales person from Humboldt, came to assess and quote our move, I specifically asked him if Humboldt could guarantee that our newly purchased furniture would not be damaged in transit. Dave MacDonald responded, “We don’t move college kids, we move professionals like yourselves. Your furniture will not be damaged.” With that commitment from Dave MacDonald and Humboldt Moving and Storage, we signed the contract and prepaid the move. Additionally, we insured the move for $12,000. On the day of the move, our furniture was disassembled, wrapped, and transferred by Humboldt‘s employees to Humboldt’s Storage facility, on a Friday. My wife supervised the pick up. Humboldt’s employees did not record any existing damage on their loading sheet. She also asked if they would ensure that the furniture will arrive in the same, flawless condition. Humboldt responded yes. This was new mid-century furniture that we purchased for an apartment that I lived in for 9 months. The furniture was barely 6 months old and 2 pieces were purchased the day before the actual move. I worked long hours during my brief stay in Boston and spent the weekends at my home in Pennsylvania. Michele Harris from Humboldt called during the loading process to check on the move. The furniture was then loaded and successfully moved to Humboldt’s storage facility. The United Van Lines driver and a helper were at our home in Pennsylvania to unload late Monday morning. As they unloaded the furniture and brought it into our home, I became sick. Almost every piece of furniture sustained damage. The bedroom furniture had deep gouges in the wood. Not just scratches, but “deep” gouges and paint scrapped off of metal pieces. The metal bed frame had large areas of paint scraped off where you could see large areas of bare metal. Wood pieces had deep gouges (not scratches), leather sofa and chairs were scuffed with large indentations and torn fabric. A long, curved modern lamp was not even disassembled for the move but just placed on the truck. United’s driver blamed the loaders at Humboldt. It appeared as though Humboldt’s employees just threw our furniture into the truck. I was sickened. . . . brand new furniture (trying to load pics below). We immediately called Humboldt who blamed the damage on United’s driver. United had us complete a claim form and sent an adjuster to our home to inspect the damage. Within 8 weeks, United Claims department sent me a claims adjustment for $2500 to cover repairs to our furniture. We told them that this was brand new furniture, there was no damage before they picked it up, and we wanted several pieces that were severely damaged to be replaced. You can’t repair deep gouges in furniture or significantly scrapped off paint and have it look like new. We sent the check back by register mail and refused the settlement. United now wants to send our claim to the Association of Movers and Storage arbitration for resolution. How fair could this be??? When my wife called United directly to seek resolution, she was treated rudely by the Claims Manager (derogatory towards women) who more or less said, “We don’t care what you do!” when my wife said we were going to pursue other action. Bottomline, we do not recommend Humboldt Storage and Moving or United Van Lines for your next move. What a shame. PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE with Humboldt and United. You will be very disappointed when your furniture is damaged and you get a meager resolution. If you have quality furniture and want it delivered undamaged, go somewhere else. Wishing you a better move . . . . with someone else! Jerry and Mary Jo Y.

If there was a negative 100 I would put it for this company. They are by far the worst moving company I have ever encountered in my life. The owners are not polite anyone you speak to on the phone has a very impolite demeanor about their voice and even an attitude. The driver was disrespectful the people who actually did the work we're very helpful and kind and went above and beyond what was expected of them I just expected them to put everything in my house and then to have to figure it out because I didn't ask them to help do extra stuff and they needed extra things to be kind so I left them a hefty tip but as for the owners and the driver this company is absolutely atrocious you're better off going and waiting there I assume they start early in the morning and wait for one of the guys that works there and just say hey I'll pay you $1,000 if you move my furniture for me. Jim and Pat sounded very nice over the phone but in reality when I called to complain about the rudeness and laziness of the driver we're completely disrespectful considering the thousands upon thousands of dollars that my husband had paid them. The only people that actually did their job correctly wear professional and kind and helpful were the actual movers not the lazy asses who work in the office for the company only their Hired Hands that do physical labor to support their families

For someone who has moved on average every 2 years for the past decade, I had the best moving experience with Humbolt Storage and Moving. They were efficient and communicated extremely well. I will absolutely use them for my next move.
