What I love about Huntington is friendly staff, few lines, and solid general care.My in patient experience with my service dog has been stellar and the hospital setting is peaceful. What I don't like: transportation issues (when I first arrived), diminishing benefits, ( I lost 1500 in clothing allowances this year alone) and constantly being farmed out to specialty services in the community. This is challenging, particularly in a rural Appalachian area where it is one hour or more to go to one appt each way.I have received very good Urgent/ ER care, but I have received more than two thousand in ambulance bills due to poor technical writing on behalf of the ambulance drivers and not getting approvals for travel resulting in several appeals for all of my transportation expenses. I am currently 700 in debt after three appeals for transportation costs. This equates to 70% of my disability income for one month. I have been endangered of homelessness on more than one occasion due to disappearing rehabilitation state funding and increased federal bureaucracy. There is a lack of housing sources for women veterans with mobility impairments and service dogs.We simply are not offered the same level of care as our male veteran counterparts in Barboursville Housing program. Handicap parking for outpatient services in the clinics are very hard to come by.The hospital cafeteria and canteen staff are friendly. The chaplain has a strong spirituality program. Women support groups here are unheard of, but the Women's Clinic staff is friendly.VA HUD VASH counselor and subsidized housing is one of the best experiences to date. I finally got VRE services after the fourth application, my experience is very good, so far.Still waiting on approval for mobility grant. Going on 15 months and still waiting....I fight every day to take another step. I was trained not to show weakness, pain and vulnerability. I am often misunderstood, and called honey and sweetie. However, the staff members with strong military experience are very accommodating.Employment has been another issue. I had a horrible experience with employment in Charleston at the Outreach. I was denied CWT for Hospital employment, and I finally found an excellent employment specialist, whom was hired by the VA. I am elated for the VA, however, to my knowledge, no replacement yet for Huntington Outreach.Overall, the hospital experience is good, but there are definite barriers to integrating care and service connection.
