Reminiscent of galleries in Bisbee, Arizona (the tiny art-laden mining town that artophiles love), the In-town Gallery still has a little bit of yard sale, home-interior decorator type art mixed in with some fantastic fine art. Locals are surprised to see price tags that don't reflect the same numbers as those posters that are printed on canvas at the local Hoppy Loppy. Art is an investment, faithful consumer, and one of a kind anything is better than 100 factory created pieces (unless you already own a Warhol). When you have had the work for 10 years, 20 years, kept it in the family, someday, on the Antiques Road Show, you may be making your great nieces and nephews rich. Besides, the best way to start redoing your entire home is buying a work of art that you love and then working around that. While sometimes the work can be a little conservative, the gallery itself provides a wonderful opportunity for local artists to display work and to connect with the community....Everyone working there is an artist. What better way to find out about art than from the artisans themselves? The work is hung salon style (one on top of another) rather than gallery style (visit AVA two doors down) where the works have little space to be taken in one at a time. The upside is you have the chance to view many works by many artists at the same time. If you feel intimidated by the entire prospect of buying art, a cooperative is a nice place to start and doesn't have that air of snootiness that some galleries can have. Visit InTown and enjoy some cool local work in an area of Chattanooga that is still hanging onto that bohemian art community feel on the North Shore. You can always stop by Clumpie's and get an ice cream to chill you out between art happenings!
