Indianapolis Zoo

About

By fostering connections between our guests & animals, we're inspiring our community to save species!

Story

Since opening in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo has emerged as a world-class facility, and it hosts more than a million visitors annually. Located in White River State Park since 1988, the 64-acre Zoo was the first to be triple accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Alliance of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium and a botanic garden. The Zoo is also a global leader in animal conservation and research. Funding from the Indianapolis Zoo also supports the efforts of animal conservation organizations around the globe.

At the Zoo, guests can connect with animals and plants within the Zoo’s biomes, or living habitats that closely resemble their native regions of the globe. These five areas — Oceans, Forests, Deserts, Encounters and Plains — are home to more than 1,600 animals of approximately 230 species as well as 31,000 plant specimens that guests can visit year-round.

White River Gardens is also part of the Zoo and continues its tradition of connecting animals, plants and people. This beautiful 3.3-acre landmark botanical attraction includes a 5,000 square-foot conservatory and combines the best of gardening ideas, plant information and inspirational design to serve the needs of all visitors.

Mission

The Indianapolis Zoo empowers people and communities, both locally and globally, to advance animal conservation.

Love being able to have a local zoo, and even though there are multiple events held at the Indianapolis Zoo throughout the year, it would be great if there were more animal attractions. It's hard to justify an annual membership when you can easily see all the animals in a short two to three hour visit. This combined with the somewhat pricey tickets are slightly offsetting. The location is perfect, and the animal attractions that the Indy Zoo does have are great, but expanding the overall footprint and animal offerings would be a great way to make this awesome zoo even better.

Extraordinary zoo full of animal and botanical life! We love the gorgeous walkways through the zoo, the dolphin show, the train, and the dog show. The orangutan exhibit is absolutely amazing! The zoo hosts great events around Halloween and during the holidays. Before you go, buy tickets online - it's much cheaper! Still pretty pricey even with online pricing, so check their day-by-day pricing to find the best deals.

Environment was beautiful and full of happy polite people. One of the workers even stopped and took our picture because she saw us trying to take a one in front of some real pretty scenery. She said can I help you guys? You both look so happy and cute and need a good memorable picture. She took 4 just to make sure it met our approval. That's so Awesome there are still good people out there like her. I wish I knew her name so I could call in on her and let them know how awesome she is

My children and I absolutely love the Indianapolis Zoo! Yes, the price is a lot which is why I would suggest investing in a zoo membership. The membership is under $200 and last a whole year and you can go whenever you want for free! You also get exclusive "Members Only" invited to special events. Some days during Spring and Summer we just go to the zoo because we can, especially on days we just want to get out of the house and go to their splash park. We always have a great time. THE MEMBERSHIP COMES IN HANDY! We always pack our lunch when we go. The dolphin show is always a hit (Except for when my children want to sit in the Splash Zone lol) We love feeding the birds, which actually helped me sort of get over my fear of birds! Our favorite is Plains and the butterflies. Oh yeah, White River Gardens is included in the membership as well and you get certain discounts. I highly recommend the Indianapolis Zoo for family outings, and I suggest just buying a membership because you will have spent a years worth of visits by the time you leave anyway!

Love the layout. A great assortment of animals. Want to go back to take my other son. Friendly staff, good food, a lots to enjoy for all ages. The dolphin show is fun and informative. Love the environmental emphasis as well. Wish other businesses would follow their lead.
